Bartelt pursued his Master of Fine Arts in Design for the Theatre.
He had the opportunity to study more intensely with the late Irving Shapiro at the American Academy of Art,
and it was under Shapiro's guidance that he began to realize his deep affection for the medium.
Bartelt brings to his paintings a theatrical eye, finding the drama and scenographic qualities inherent in the subjects he chooses.
MGM studios tapped these abilities during the Chicago filming of "Return to Me".
Bartelt was brought on to provide all of the watercolors for "artist" Minnie Driver's character and also advised Ms. Driver on her actual painting scenes.

Bartelt spent his boyhood travelling the city streets and Illinois farm roads with his father,
a John Deere dealer, who also had great fascination for Chicago - its lore and mythic proportions. So,
in his paintings, he employs not only contemporary observation but also instills in them the resonance of memory.
